How Procedural Generation is Changing Level Design
28-09-2024

Historically, every pixel, tree, and corridor in a video game was manually placed by a human designer in a process known as bespoke level design. Today, a different technique—Procedural Generation—is radically changing how games are built. By using algorithms to create content on the fly, games can offer practically infinite replayability and massive, unpredictable worlds. But how does this affect the art of design?
The Roguelike Resurgence
The most visible application of procedural generation is in the roguelike genre (Spelunky, Hades, The Binding of Isaac). In these games, the layout of the levels changes every time the player dies and restarts. The design challenge shifts from "making an interesting level" to "designing interesting rules that generate good levels." Developers create 'chunks' or 'rooms' and write logic dictates how they stitch together, ensuring a path is always navigable while keeping enemy and loot placement varied and engaging.
Scaling the Open World
Beyond small indie titles, massive games like No Man's Sky and Minecraft utilize procedural generation on a spectacular scale, generating entire planets and topography based on mathematical noise functions. Here, the technology isn't just about replayability; it's about sheer scale that would be impossible for human hands to build. The future of level design isn't about placing every single rock; it's about crafting the algorithms and foundational tools that build the world organically while the player explores it.
