Narrative Branching: Writing Games Where Choices Actually Matter
15-11-2024

"Your choices matter." It is one of the most common marketing slogans in role-playing games, yet it is arguably the most difficult promise to fulfill. Writing a linear story for a book or film is challenging enough; writing a branching narrative for a video game, where the player is an active participant dictating the flow of events, is a monumental logistical undertaking.
The Cost of Branches
The fundamental issue with branching narratives is exponential fragmentation. If a player makes a choice in act one that splits the story into two distinct timelines, the developer now has to write, voice, animate, and program two separate games going forward. If another choice is made, that becomes four paths, then eight. Consequently, true "branching" is incredibly expensive. Most games employ the "Illusion of Choice," where decisions alter immediate dialogue or minor characters, but the structural plot points ultimately funnel back into a central, inescapable narrative chokepoint.
The State-Tracking Puzzle
Games that successfully implement profound narrative consequence, like Disco Elysium or Baldur's Gate 3, achieve it through incredibly complex state-tracking. The game constantly tracks hundreds of variables in the background: whom you offended, what item you carry, and what secret you discovered. Writing these games requires creating massive flowcharts rather than traditional scripts, constantly anticipating how drastically different iterations of the protagonist might react to the same scenario. When it works, it creates an unparalleled sense of personal investment that no other medium can replicate.
